Berkeley Show - Monday 30th August 2010

On the August bank holiday, the sun came out and shone on everyone for the 109th Berkeley Show. This well supported show set in the fabulous grounds of Berkley castle drew huge crowds who come to enjoy the various trade stands, equestrian events and livestock classes.

The George Vet Group's large stand drew much attention from both members of the public, keen to understand more about what we do, and our regular farm clients. Our farm vets were on hand throughout the day to answer questions and demonstrate some of the veterinary equipment we typically use out on farms.

People were impressed by our ultrasound scanners, bacteriology plates, calving equipment, cattle lameness videos, and samples of cow's food. The many photographs depicting common farm animal ailments were very popular! It was also an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the quality service and expertise offered by George Vet Group's Farm Team. Over a pint of local cider, farmers were able to discuss our services including herd health schemes, mastitis reports, fertility visits, incorporating bull breeding examination, embryo transfer and lameness assessments.

Everyone had the opportunity to enter our competition to quess the weight of Jemima the prize winning Dexter cow, owned by our practice vet, Alex Thomsett. The prize was an exclusive cow print rugby shirt.  Jemima weighed in at 319.55kg and the winner was Peter Gibbs from Yate who guessed a weight of 320kg. Well done Peter!

The delicious complimentary ice cream, which was made on one of our farms, and of course the local cider went down well with everyone - glad of refreshment on a hot day! A lot of work went into the organisation of the stand, but it was well worth it. Everyone had a great day and we hope you will back to join us in the future!
