Perhaps we could follow the example of an all-inclusive holistic Olympian attitude to sport and apply it to our farms.
We are often given the metaphor of our dairy cows being top track and field athletes. While training Mo Farah maintains an energy intake of around 300MJ per day, with Usain Bolt consuming around 230MJ. Our dry cow requires around 90MJ per day but once milking up to 25-30 litres she will increase her energy demands three fold to over 300MJ per day. Michael Phelps, when at his peak performance, was consuming a whopping 500MJ daily!
In this edition also we discuss multi-species grazing.
It was with real sadness that we learnt of the death of Mr Peter Oura, one of the founders of The George Veterinary Group, on the 21st August. His funeral was held at St. Aldhelms Church and was a moving celebration of a unique, talented and much loved man. Everyone at the practice would like to extend our sympathies and thoughts to all of Peter's family at this difficult time.
