BPHS - A wonderful scheme

For those of you that are not familiar with BPHS, it is the British Pig Health Scheme, provided by AHDB Pork, and it is a wonderful thing! BPHS involves a team of specialist Pig Vets who visit abattoirs and examine 50 pigs from each slap mark killed that day. We record Enzootic Pneumonia like lesions, Pleuropneumonia (APP-like lesions), Viral Pneumonia, Pleurisy, Pericarditis, Peritonitis, Pyaemia, Milk spot, Abscesses, Liver Scarring, Papular Dermatitis (Mange-like lesions) and Tail Bites. This provides you as producers, and us as your vets, with high quality information about the health of your pigs. This helps us monitor your overall health, and can give an early identification of emerging disease problems or outbreaks.

Through BPHS we have identified several breaks in health status before producers have recognised the problem, including EP and Swine Dysentery, allowing us to swiftly treat and apply strict biosecurity to the affected, and surrounding farms, successfully limiting spread.
