New guidance for travelling abroad with pets

Any EU "pet passport" issued prior to 2021, for travel from the UK to either the EU or NI, became invalid for travel from 1st January 2021. Since 1st January 2021, an animal health certificate must be issued before your dog, cat or ferret can travel to the EU or NI - We can provide this for you.

What does my pet need to apply for an animal health certificate?

  • Your dog, cat or ferret must be microchipped.
  • Your dog, cat or ferret needs to be vaccinated against rabies.
  • You will need to wait 21 days after vaccination before you travel
  • Currently there are no requirements for rabies bloods.

How do I get an animal health certificate?

An animal health certificate (AHC) can only be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).  An OV is a vet who has been authorised by the government. We have a number of OVs here at the George.

When you come for animal health certificate appointment please bring your pet, along with your rabies vaccination record. This may come in the form of your traditional EU pet passport or vaccination card.
